A Smart-E Loan can be used for any of the following home improvements. Find a Contractor to start planning your project and ensure it meets the technical standards specified below. Your contractor can determine if any home improvements are eligible for incentives. Once you have project quotes, reach out to a lender to start the application process.

Solar or Roofing
- Solar installation (includes solar shingles)
- FORTIFIED roof
- Roof repair (must be done in conjunction with a solar, FORTIFIED roof, attic, or wall insulation project)
Water Heating
- Heat pump water heater
- Indirect water heater - natural gas
- Natural gas storage or condensing water heater
- On-demand tankless water heater (natural gas / propane)
- Solar hot water heater
Battery Storage
- Battery storage
- Elevate or relocate service equipment
- Install electric subpanel for critical utilities on backup power
- EV charging stations
Health & Safety
- Asbestos abatement (including vermiculite)*

- Knob and tube removal
- Lead abatement & lead water pipe replacement

Windows
- Replacement (ENERGY STAR (when possible), U-factor ≤0.27; not for unconditioned spaces)

- Repoint deteriorated mortar in basement walls and around windows

Other improvements can be part of a Smart-E loan must be done in conjunction with a stand-alone measure and is limited to 25% financing. These improvements include: structural remediation, unlisted repairs that are connected to other projects, Energy Star appliances (including heat pump dryers), and tree removal related to solar installations.
