Health & Safety for Homeowners

Improve the health & safety of your home

You want your home to be safe, comfortable, and energy efficient. However, many homes have mold, lead pipes, asbestos, or old wiring that can cause health and safety issues and may prevent the completion of other energy related improvements. Using the Smart-E loan, you can remediate these dangers with flexible, lower interest financing!

Eligible Health & Safety Improvements:

  • Mold*: Mold is bad for your health and it can prevent improvements from being made. Find a contractor to remediate mold issues here.
  • Asbestos*: Homes built before 1980 are more likely to contain asbestos, possibly wrapping pipes or ductwork. Contractors offering this service can be found here.
  • Lead pipes: Drinking water that comes into your home through lead pipes is a health issue.
  • Electrical upgrades: Removing knob and tube wiring and updating an electrical panel can help make your home safer.
  • Septic systems: Repair or replace your septic system or connect to public sewers. Find participating septic contractors here.
  • Wells: Improve your private well or connect to public water using one of these eligible contractors.
  • Basement floodproofing: If water is entering your home, it can cause mold and other problems. Contact a professional to learn more.

* Smart-E loans for mold and asbestos projects offer 5, 7, and 10-year terms and financing up to $25,000. Smart-E applications that includes mold or asbestos abatement will require one of the following:

  • Inclusion of an energy measure or environmental resilience project (like floodproofing) in the proposed job
  • Recent (within 1 year) HES audit
  • Documentation of an upcoming HES audit
  • Documentation of a recent HVAC installation
  • Documentation of a recent water-related repair in the home

How to get started

1

Work with a participating contractor. See our list of current contractors offering the loan. (Please note that any contractor can become eligible to join the program to offer the Smart-E loan.)

2

Apply for a Smart-E loan. Contact a local participating Smart-E lender directly with the amount you need to finance and apply for pre-approval.

3

Contractor submits the project. Once your Smart-E loan is approved, let your contractor know they can submit the project to our Smart-E team.

4

Loan closing and project completion. After the loan is closed, the contractor receives a partial payment to begin the work and will receive final payment(s) as the project is completed.
