Discuss market trends and opportunities for collaboration:

  • Grow your business by promoting deeper energy savings
  • Discuss industry gaps and opportunities
  • Learn how energy trends impact residential and commercial markets in Connecticut
What does the future of residential and commercial energy in Connecticut look like and what does that mean for your business? Hear from DEEP, Eversource, United Illuminating, and the Connecticut Green Bank about how the most significant emerging trends and technologies will impact you.

Event schedule:

2:30 – 3:00 pm  Registration

3:00– 3:50 pm – Break-out Sessions (Select One)

Solar + the New CES
With the coming expiration of the ZREC program, the Comprehensive Energy Strategy lays out a new framework for solar in Connecticut. Hear from DEEP and others in the market about the proposals around net metering, RECs, tariffs and more.

Growing Opportunities in Under-served Communities
The state is focused on ensuring inclusive prosperity. The energy burden is heaviest on communities with fewer resources. This session showcase contractors, property managers, and landlords taking advantage of Energize CT programs to help make energy improvements in distressed communities throughout the state. Learn about credit quality and consumer preferences of low to moderate income communities and  market tools for targeted engagement.

4:00 – 4:50 pm – (Plenary) Emerging Opportunities in the CES
What does the future of residential energy in Connecticut look like and what does that mean for your business? Hear from DEEP, United Illuminating, Eversource, and the Connect Green Bank about the most significant emerging trends and technologies.  Presenters are: Bryan Garcia, CEO, Connecticut Green Bank; Mary Sotos, Deputy Commissioner, Depart. of Energy and Environmental Protection; Pat McDonnell, Senior Dir. of Conservation and Load Management, United Illuminating; and Ron Araujo, Manager of Energy Efficiency, Eversource.

5:00 – 5:50 pm – Break-out Sessions (Select One)

Strategic Electrification of buildings and transportation in the proposed CES
The proposed 2017 CES focuses on the importance of strategic electrification of the grid and transportation sector to help the state meet its carbon reduction goals. Learn what strategic electrification means and how your company and benefit from these goals.

Real Time, Real Savings: New Technologies for Optimizing and Meeting Building Energy Loads
This panel will feature companies and their solutions for enabling customers to better understand and manage building energy loads through sensors, metering, smart controls, equipment upgrades, and energy storage. Brief product demonstrations will be followed by discussions of the Connecticut market, business model and financing innovation (including available Green Bank resources), opportunities to build relationships between contractors and a Q&A.

Quick, Healthy, & Green: Unlocking utility incentives and financing for Multifamily clean energy retrofits and new construction
Incorporating renewable energy and efficiency measures in multifamily retrofits and new construction projects is becoming more frequent and desirable.  This session will explore the tools necessary to advance green housing development at both the design and construction phases.  During this interactive session, you’ll have an opportunity to ask questions about your properties and projects, and learn how to achieve energy savings using other people’s money.

“Beyond Zero Net Energy” with Marc Rosenbaum

November 14 @ 5:30 pm – 9:00 pm at Two Roads Brewing Company

Registration Coming Soon

The next step “Beyond Zero Net Energy” is pushing to see how much energy used on site can be supplied by the PV system. In suntempered superinsulated housing, with PV system sized to zero out the annual consumption, only about 1/4 of the PV energy is used as it is generated. On-site battery storage makes it possible to drive this fraction up significantly. We’ll look at daily and seasonal residential energy use data from low energy homes, and how that compares to PV generation. Using an simulation tool that uses hourly inputs for energy use and PV generation, we’ll examine the effects of varying battery and PV array sizing, as well as load variation, on the degree of renewable self-consumption that can be achieved. We’ll draw some insights from all this and the implications for how we think about design.

Learning objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe both daily and seasonal patterns of residential energy use in low load houses.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to draw and describe a basic PV plus battery storage system conceptual one line.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe how battery storage changes self-consumption fraction both daily and seasonally.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe how adding battery storage to PV systems on low load houses changes how we think about designing those houses.

Obtain 2.5 HSW hours of AIA Learning Units

Marc Rosenbaum, P.E.Marc Rosenbaum, P.E. is a long-time student of making great buildings. He uses an integrated systems design approach to help people create buildings and communities connected to the natural world, supporting both personal and planetary health. Much of his recent work has been Zero Net Energy Buildings, Deep Energy Retrofits and Passive Houses. His work has been recognized nationally by ASHRAE, AIA, EEBA, and NESEA, but they didn’t see all the mistakes along the way.
